Ethical Oversight Policy

LITERATUR: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra is committed to ensuring that all research published in the journal is conducted ethically and responsibly. This policy describes the ethical standards that authors must follow and how the journal oversees ethical matters throughout the publication process, in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Research Involving Human Participants

Research in language, literature, and language and literature learning often involves human participants, such as students, teachers, lecturers, informants, native speakers, writers, and members of speech communities. Authors must ensure that such research respects the rights, dignity, privacy, and well-being of all participants.

Authors must:

  1. obtain the necessary research permits from the relevant schools, institutions, or local authorities;
  2. obtain informed consent from all participants before data collection, after explaining the purpose of the research, the procedures involved, and how the data will be used and published;
  3. inform participants that their participation is voluntary and that they may withdraw at any time without consequence;
  4. obtain ethical approval from an ethics committee or relevant institutional body when required by the authors’ institution or by the nature of the research.

Research Involving Children and Vulnerable Groups

When research involves children under 18 years of age, such as school students, consent must be obtained from their parents or legal guardians, and permission must be obtained from the school or institution concerned. The assent of the children themselves should also be sought in a manner appropriate to their age. Special care must also be taken when research involves other vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities and members of marginalized or minority communities.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Authors must protect the privacy of research participants. Names, photographs, voice recordings, and other information that could identify participants must not be published unless the participants (or, for children, their parents or guardians) have given explicit written consent for publication. Where possible, participants should be anonymized using codes or pseudonyms. Research data, including interview transcripts, recordings, field notes, and corpus data, must be stored securely and used only for the purposes agreed upon with participants.

Respect for Communities and Cultural Materials

Research involving speech communities, oral traditions, local or indigenous knowledge, and culturally sensitive materials must be conducted with respect for the values, customs, and rights of the communities concerned. Authors should obtain permission from community leaders or custodians where appropriate and acknowledge the contributions of informants and communities.

Use of Literary Works and Other Sources

Quotations from literary works, manuscripts, archives, and other copyrighted materials must be used appropriately for scholarly purposes, accurately reproduced, and properly cited. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission when reproducing substantial portions of copyrighted works, images, or unpublished manuscripts.

Reporting Ethical Information in the Manuscript

Authors must describe how ethical requirements were met in the Research Method section of the manuscript, including research permits, the informed consent procedure, ethical approval (where applicable), and measures taken to protect participants’ privacy. Authors must keep records of permits, consent forms, and ethical approvals, and provide them to the editor upon request.

Editorial Oversight

During initial screening and peer review, editors and reviewers assess whether the research has been conducted ethically. The journal may request research permits, informed consent records, ethical approval documents, raw data, or other supporting evidence at any stage of the editorial process. Manuscripts that do not meet ethical standards, or whose authors cannot provide adequate evidence of ethical compliance when requested, may be returned for revision or rejected.

Handling Ethical Concerns

Any concern about the ethical conduct of research submitted to or published in the journal can be reported to the editor at [email protected]. Concerns are handled fairly, confidentially, and proportionately in accordance with the journal’s Allegation of Research Misconduct policy. Where ethical violations are confirmed in a published article, the journal may issue a correction, an expression of concern, or a retraction in accordance with its Correction and Retraction policy and the COPE guidelines.
